- Lay down expectations and consequences. The child should understand that using drugs or alcohol comes with specific consequences. We won’t make hollow threats or set rules that we cannot enforce. We will ensure all the team agrees with the expectations and is prepared to enforce them.
- Monitor the childs activity. We will know where the child goes and who he or she hangs out with. It’s also important that if necessary we routinely check potential hiding places for drugs or alcohol. Explain to the child that this lack of privacy is a consequence of him or her having been caught using drugs or alcohol.
- Encourage other interests and social activities. We will expose and encourage all children to participate in healthy hobbies and activities.
- Talk to the child about underlying issues. Drug or alcohol abuse use can be the result of other problems. Is the child having trouble fitting in? Has there been a recent major change, like a move or divorce, which is causing stress or concern?
