About the Barge

Moored in a beautiful area of Lancashire, we offer a 28 days, 2:1 solo assessment placement, for young people in crisis.

Shrewsbury Barge travels on the Leeds Liverpool Canal, The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is a canal in Northern England, linking the cities of Leeds and Liverpool. Over a distance of 127 miles (204 km), it crosses the Pennines, and includes 91 locks on the main line.

All of our barges focus on reducing risk taking behaviour, breaking cycles and promoting change. Life on board is varied across all barges but with some common themes.

A barge captain works daily alongside the dedicated staff teams on all barges to offer training to the young person on all things barge related. A past sea master, our Barge Captain promotes the benefits of life at sea to all our young people.

Sharing his knowledge and skill set of a well-travelled life, the Captain encourages all young people to get involved and learn skills around:

  • Driving the barge
  • Life on board
  • Mechanics
  • H&S
  • Man overboard training
  • First Aid at Sea

This experience allows the young person to try new things, challenge themselves, learn skills and experience a true sense of adventure.

I’ve worked on the barge for 2 years, I came for a job in the homes originally, but once I sampled the barge and travelling along the Leeds Liverpool canal. I knew that I wanted to stay on the barges and haven't looked back
